Configuring Outgoing Email and DNS Settings

When sending newsletters, marketing messages, or other large email campaigns, it is important to configure the Outgoing Email settings in your Bonsait account. This ensures that your emails are delivered to recipients and recognized as coming from a trusted sender. Without the correct technical settings, emails may end up in the spam folder or may even be completely blocked from reaching their destination.

Technically, SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) records are added to the domain settings to prevent email spoofing and ensure that the recipient can trust the sender. At the same time, these records give Bonsait’s communication solution permission to send emails using the specified domain. Therefore, if these configurations are not made, emails cannot be sent using that domain, and a generic address will be used to send the messages instead.

Follow the steps below to enable Outgoing Email:

Step 1: Accessing the Outgoing Email Settings

  1. Log in to your Bonsait account at account.bonsait.fi.
  2. Select the page you want to edit and go to the Settings page.
  3. You must be the owner of your website to edit Site Properties and configure Outgoing Email settings. If the Settings button is not visible on the site, contact our support team.
  4. Click on Outgoing Email.

Step 2: Adding Your Domain

  1. Enter your domain name (e.g., example.com) in the "Add Domain" field.
  2. Click the Connect button.

Step 3: Obtaining DNS Settings

  1. Once your domain is connected, Bonsait will generate the required SPF and DKIM records.
  2. These records will now be displayed in the Outgoing Email section, so you can check them later.

Step 4: Updating Your DNS Settings

You have two options for updating your DNS settings:

Preferred Method: Contact Your Domain Registrar

  1. Contact your domain registrar. This is typically the service where you receive your domain billing.
  2. Provide them with the SPF and DKIM records generated in Bonsait.
  3. Request them to update your domain's DNS settings, taking into account the previous configurations.

This is the recommended and easiest method to update the settings.

Secondary Method: Update DNS Settings Yourself

  1. Log in to your domain registrar's control panel.
  2. Go to the DNS management section.
  3. Add the SPF and DKIM records as instructed in the Bonsait interface.
  4. Save the changes.

Step 5: Verifying the DNS Settings

  1. Return to the site's Outgoing Email tab.
  2. Click the Verify button to ensure that the DNS settings have been applied correctly.
  3. If the verification is successful and a message appears next to your domain saying Domain is set and ready to use, your domain is now configured for sending emails.

Note that DNS changes may take up to 48 hours to propagate globally. Typically, changes are visible within an hour of configuration.
